What Is Momentary Time Sampling?
Momentary time sampling is a discontinuous measurement method where the observer records whether the target behavior is occurring at the exact end of each interval.
How It Works
In momentary time sampling, the observer does not watch the full interval and then average the whole thing. The check happens at the end of the interval, and the record is a simple yes/no at that checkpoint moment.
That makes it a good fit for group settings, classroom routines, and other busy environments where continuous measurement would be too heavy to maintain.
Exam Shortcut
If the question says “in momentary time sampling, the observer records”, the correct idea is:
- Check behavior at the exact end of the interval.
- Record whether it is happening right then.
- Do not score the entire interval continuously.
